Here To Stay: The People's Choice 92.10 FM

2015-11-04 08.59.26 So About Last was indeed a pleasure chatting with the General Manager, Charles O. Johnson II, and Media Sales Executive, Ricco Johnson about coming to the Triangle and why they are The People's Choice Station! Here's how it all went down!

So to give you some backdrop info on 92.10 FM historically it was a station primarily covered in Wilson, Greenville, and Rocky Mount Areas. The Eastern Carolina radio station was purchased in 1996 by his parents covering the Elm City, Wilson, and Rocky Mount perimeters.

The station gave listeners a voice to call in to express their opinions and to hear the quality music they enjoy. It was when the passing of Mr. Johnson's father months later in 1996 is when he came on board to manage the station. It was the transitional move to purchase more tower coverage when the station arrived in the Triangle just 3 months ago. So now that I have you caught up a bit let's see what Mr. Johnson had to say about where they are in 2015!

What has the experience been like as a new Hip Hop & R&B Station in the RDU Area?

C. Johnson: "The people I have met in Raleigh have shown me a whole lot of love.  I've been out passing out flyers, talking with business owners, and received the "that's what's up" nod response which has been wonderful. The people here really appreciate having choice with a lowercase "c" and capital "C". There is so much diversity and culture here in Raleigh which matches so well with the station."

What type of community outreach and efforts are you looking to do?

C. Johnson: "Being that we are a radio station I am about bringing people in to talk to our listeners about community efforts. We had community activists, reporters from the Indy Newspaper, local artists, and every Wednesday we have Carolina Home Jams that we review to play. All genres are welcome to display their art. We've had 9th Wonder, Big Pooh but we gotta get Phonte in the studio so then we could have had every member of the group Little Brother"!

What are the radio segments that you offer?

C. Johnson:  The Breakfast Club is our nationally syndicated morning show with Charlamange tha God, DJ Envy, and Angela Yee. Also, in the morning is JoJo Peoples from morning to mid-day shift. Johnny Starks takes the 1-6pm afternoon shift with Koolout Radio , and Dj2wenty & Jalisa McFat wrap up the evening shift to 10pm! Now Saturdays its "The Legal Show" with Attorney Clifton Gray III offering free legal advice to callers. Sunday morning's "It's Me" with the gospel show "Joy in the Morning" to bring you a LeCrae, J. Moss, Tye Tribbett, Mali Music, or Erica Campbell type of vibe music! " We have area pastors like Rev. James D. Gailliard of Word Tabernacle Church from Rocky Mount, Senior Pastor J.J. Wilkins, Jr. of Wake Chapel Church of Raleigh, and Pastor Victor Baines of Bread of Life Family Worship Church in Wilson , and Dr. Harry White with the "Spiritual Minute". "

Any words of encouragement for people who want to get into radio?

C. Johnson: "Voice and produce a good radio commercial chances are you can go to any station because its a skill and talent not many people take time to develop. So begin with creating commercials that can go on-air because its easier to have someone already trained to do it is what I would advise. Stations are always looking for salespeople so gain experience in sales but you must bring something you can offer the station. "

"This is the type of station my father ran and I do now because we like to pull people into our station. We are a crossroad for the sacred and secular for people to enjoy." - C. Johnson

The longevity of 92.10 FM has shown that consistency and being a voice in the community has brought much success. Listeners can feel free to call in to share their opinions live about various topics from politics, music, or religion. For so long the Triangle area has only had one primary radio source for Hip Hop & R&B until now. The people have spoken and its The People's Choice 92.10 FM station that is here to stay! As always Ladies & Gentleman this is RDU's Premiere blog The Lux Blog NC!
