Radio Personality/DJ G-Moniy of Foxy 99: The Big Stick has to be one of the most hilarious people I have ever met. I can't tell you how much fun it was to interview this guy. He's a Fayetteville State University Alum and respected professional in his field. He interned his last semester in college at Foxy 99 for 10 months in 2006 and graduated in December . He literally interned until he was given a job. He ended up working at both Kiss 107.7 and Foxy 99 but eventually doing the morning & weekend shows at Kiss 107.7 then hoping over to Foxy 99. We got a chance to catch up over lunch about his beginnings in radio, his playlist, and his college click of "ugly bruthas" that had me rolling.
So here's how it all went down....
How did your career begin in media?
G-Moniy: "Entertainment is something I always wanted to do. Growing up when I was in high school I wanted to play basketball but you know in the back of your head your thinking I may not actually get to do this. Well when I went to college it was not my intention to take radio classes more so computer science. But by the luck of the draw all of my computer science teachers were foreign so I couldn't understand what they were saying. So I changed my major 2 times. So I became a Communications major and I was taking classes to operate tv equipment. So my first plan was to go to Raleigh to work behind the scenes at a tv station. But they gave us a chance to work in radio and I fell in love with radio instantly. Radio is all your hearing so if I can paint a picture for you and you see it wanting then wanting to be apart of it then that's great."
"We were just a group of friends in college that called ourselves the "Ugly Bruthas" just joking around and it actually caught on around campus."
What music is in your playlist right now?
G-Moniy: "In my playlist right now is J. Cole, Fabulous, Kendrick Lamar, Logic, and I love Jay Electronica but he doesn't have anything new so I will say Drake too. I do listen to his music. I'm not a huge Fetty Wap fan but I give him respect because he does not disrespect women in his music. I respect what he's doing with his music. My favorite rappers are definitely Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, Biggie, Tupac, Nas, Outkast, A Tribe Called Quest, and I just love all types of music like pop. I really like Katie Perry, Bruno Mars, Linkin Park, and so many other artists."
If I go through my Top 5 singers I have to give it to R. Kelly because he's one of my all time favorite entertainers! - G-Moniy
How did you start djing?
G-Moniy: "I started djing about 3 and half years ago so I really embraced Top 40. I think people assumed because I worked at the radio station all I listened to is hip hop music. But once clubs realized that I'm able to be so versatile I started getting booked a lot. I started out in Lillington, NC for Campbell University actually but I can adapt to any audience. I joined a DJ crew called Fleet DJs the end of 2014 and they gave me a chance to do an internet radio show called "All Star Radio". Its on every Monday at 3pm on Fleetdjs.com and then I was contacted to do "All Star Radio" every Thursday on Fuegoradio.us."
G-Moniy has not only been mixing it on the turntables but in life as well. His story shows us its not about where you start but how you finish. How many of us have gone off to college with an intended major or career aspiration only to be in a totally different field. I'm including myself in that group! Also, I commend him for repping where he is. Sure he could have ended up in Raleigh working in television but radio was where he was meant to make his mark. Big time salute to G-Moniy for great conversation and being a humble guy! Make sure you check him out on Instagram @G_Moniy!
