DJ Skillz: The Mash Out King Is Here!

Happy Weekend Luvs! Many of you I'm sure are taking part in the festivities of CIAA 2016 ! A time where the day parties are way more hype than the night parties. Then when the night time hits its all roads leading to the Epicentre where the Queen City comes alive! I had the pleasure of interviewing one of the hottest DJs in the country whose business branding persona speaks volumes. He's one of the hardest working DJs I've ever seen taking his brand as "The Great American DJ" to the next level! Tonight its all about DJ Skillz. We got a chance to talk about his journey to becoming one of the most sought after DJs in America, whose on his bucket list to perform with, and what's next for him in 2016!

How did your story begin to become a professional DJ?

DJ Skillz: "I'm originally from Florence, SC and I've been DJing professionally now for over 12 years. I've always had a fascination with music and I taught myself how to the play drums when I was like 5 or 6 years old. But I was always as a kid watching DJs on Rap City and Teen Summit while growing up and they always stood out to me. My first chance to touch some turntables was during my 10th or 11th grade year in high school with my cousin DJ Ced and since then it was like a match made in heaven. I got the chance to go on tour in 99 during my freshman year in college so its been steady grinding since then."

The only person on my bucket list I haven't worked with yet is Stevie Wonder.

Any words of advice for those that want to pursue a career as a professional DJ?

DJ Skillz: "Chase the Purpose not the Profit. The money is going to come. One of reasons Doug E. Fresh brought me out with him and preached to me was your out here because of your skill level.  I can tell you really have a passion for what you do and anyone can see that. I've been watching how you are on stage and you do it with a passion. So stay on that path and never chase the money. This is coming from someone that is a hip hop performer that does 160 shows a year and I'm right there along with him doing 140-160 shows."

You can't play for a crowd out of town like you do with a crowd your use to. So I had to really do my homework by studying music and not just the music that was current right now. I've always been a student of the game and I like to take people on a musical journey - DJ Skillz

What's next for you in 2016?

DJ Skillz: "Alot of things have already been put in motion. I have plans to take my brand and expand it overseas so we already have a couple of dates locked in. I want to get  on a bigger platform into doing more high-end events such as 3 weeks ago Doug E. Fresh invited me to come do the Image Awards After Party. So pretty much the things I've been wanting to do for my brand for the past year and a half has started to come together."

One of the things that separates me from others is what I play and how I play it because its supposed to be a musical experience that the DJ provides - DJ Skillz

What do you like to do in your time away from the turntables?

DJ Skillz: "I love to travel out the country, I love beaches, like to jet-ski, love to bowl, and play golf. I'm athletic so I like to play basketball and get on the court every once an awhile to make sure my game is on. I love spending time with my family."

The Great American DJ is indeed DJ Skillz. His skill set is phenomenal and reaches audiences worldwide not just because of his talents but his attention to detail. I admire his story because it reminds me so much of my own. Its true that when you chase your passion and not profit that is when unlimited opportunities for success and fortune can happen. Its so many people in life that only dream about doing their passion for a living. DJ Skillz is an inspiring story of a young boy from the Southern roots of Florence, South Carolina who is now one of the hottest DJs in the country. It goes to show you its not where you are from but how far your willing to go. For DJ Skillz that pathway is limitless.
