The 4/20 with Lyricist Samson

Happy  Wednesday Luvs!

We made it to the middle of the week and the weekend is only days away! I love spotlighting artists in my area as you know so I got the chance to meet tonight's post at a showcase back on St. Patrick's Day! As a Hip Hop lover, especially conscious rap, I was excited to see many lyricists with messages performing that night. One of them was artist Samson and his lyrical flow gave me a 90's feel with a 2016 twist. So of course I had to snag a interview with the Houston, Texas native turned NC lyricist! We got a chance to chat about his journey to becoming a rapper, his new music, and his performance which is tonight at Deep South Bar!

So here's how it all went down.......

How did your rap career begin?

Samson: "I've always rapped. Freestyling with my friends and such. I've never really took it seriously. I grew up in Houston, Texas but when I moved here (NC) that's when I started taking more seriously. I entered a battle at the Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill in 2002 when I first moved here. In that battle I met 9th Wonder and I started to do some work with him. I formed a group by then called Sawed Off. Then me and one of the other members of the group ran into a little law trouble but when we came out we decided to do the solo thing."

How are you now branding your rap career as a solo artist?

Samson: "I'm a solo artist and I'm apart of a record label in Virginia called RawSole Records but I'm still pushing my own thing. Its great to have the push from the label and independently so its more like a joint venture between the two of us to touch more hands. I've been signed with them for about 3-4 months so this is my first project with them."

Rollin Thru The 919

What can we expect from your upcoming music?

Samson:" I dropped a new single, my little Raleigh anthem, called Rollin Thru The 919 is on all the streaming apps now like iTunes, Spotify, Google Play, Amazon, Tidal, and all that stuff. We are going to drop my album around the end of May called MILF (Music Inspires Life Forever)."

This project I have experimented more with different production sounds where traditionally I do more of a old-school Boom Bap type of Hip Hop. This is into other beats and more trap style beats even though I don't rap like a trap rapper and probably never will.- Samson

Who is Samson the artist?

Samson: "I'm not a copycater. I created my own lane and I want people to see you can be original. You can be yourself. You don't have to follow anybody anymore. The beauty of the internet era is there is a lane for everyone. You don't have to follow a certain path to get on there are many avenues now. You can create your own music and your own fan base."

What are things you love to do in your down time?

Samson: "I'm a reafer enthusiast and I'm a big sports nut. I like basketball, baseball, and football. Sports is a very important of my life. I played football, collegiality, briefly so sports has always been apart of my life."

Upcoming Events? Tonight!

Samson's journey was not one you hear very often. What once was a hobby with friends turned into a viable career and record deal. Not too many people's hobbies end up with that type of success and he's just getting started with his new level of solo music. This is definitely a story of faithfulness and believing in yourself. No matter where you are in life there is always opportunity to start over when your ready to make that change. Don't allow the adversities  to get you down use them as material to take your career to the next level. If your in Raleigh, NC tonight swing by Deep South Bar for great show!
