Mixing Things Up with DJ K Yung
Happy Wednesday Luvs!
Its been an amazing week so far. As you know we love our DJs and Radio Personalities at The Lux Blog! They bring us the latest in music and pop culture daily. Whether we are rocking to their mixes at the most lavish parties, brunches, networking mixers, or on the radio they keep us in the know of all things music! So today's post is about an innovative DJ that has taken her brand to the next level. She can be found at several club residencies such as Roosters in Rock Island, Illinois, Fridays at The Barrel House in Downtown Moline, Illinois, and Saturdays co-resident DJ at The Venue or The Brix Annex in Downtown Moline, Illinois. Not to mention she has her own App for all of our smartphones! In honor of "Working Women Wednesday" I present to you DJ K Yung! We got a chance to chat about her DJ career, being your own boss, Monster Jam, and having her own App.
So here's how it all went down.......
How did your DJ career begin?
DJ K Yung:" I have always had a love for music but I had a friend a long time ago who tried out for "Making the Band" with Puffy or Diddy and she did all that. She did pretty well and made it pretty far with that even though she obviously didn't make it. She asked me to manage her career but there came a time back in high school I kind of messed around with the turntables my friends had. So after I got done managing and consulting I just kind of picked it up because a friend of mine needed a DJ for his sister's graduation. I couldn't find anybody with such short notice so I said I'll just do it myself. I loved it and I had forgot how much I love deejaying. It was kind of a fluke actually because I was supposed to be managing artists doing the business side of it like managing and consulting.
How long have you been deejaying?
DJ K Yung:"This is my 9th year I was just thinking about it the other day and it took me about 4 years to figure out how to DJ. About 5 years ago I started making money and getting my name out there then I started working in clubs. So finally last August I was able to quit my full-time job and DJ full-time. Its been such a blessing."
How was it transitioning from working full-time and deejaying to now being your own boss?
DJ K Yung: " Let me tell you there is no book in the World that can prepare you for it. I can't pretend to say it was easy because its not. Even just waking up thinking oh my gosh what if the club owners tell me they don't need me to deejay anymore. I told my parents and fiance I think I should find a job. They were like no just chill out your fine. Its been scary but I've just trusted that it will work out. God has blessed me and things are kind of falling into place. I love that I am now my own boss."
I wake up everyday happy. If your not waking up happy doing what you love then your just working. - DJ K Yung
Tell us about Monster Jam. How has that experience been for you?
DJ K Yung: "It happened because of my friend Ken who worked at my old job that I quit. He actually is a rep for the company I worked for. So he would come visit and try to sell me stuff. So one afternoon he was schmoozing me with lunch trying to get me to buy something of course and after we stopped talking about business he asked me what do I do so I told him I DJ now. He told me about Monster Jam and at the time they were on Speed TV so I went back to work and watched it. He said if you like it let me know. This is not like your county fair event this is like an NFL stadium and arenas they are doing. So I put my resume in and my voice track and I got the job. It's been amazing. If you would have asked me 4 or 5 years ago it would not be something I would be saying I'm doing".
Any upcoming projects for this year?
DJ K Yung: "I just released today that I am opening my own online radio station called Flood 93 that will be playing Hip Hop, Rap, R&B, Trap (like medium trap), and Soca music. A little bit of everything. I have the App now to listen to it for free. I wanted to make sure people have access to everything. I'm working on a small EP and I'm producing it I am hoping to release it this Fall or Winter."
DJ K Yung has had a phenomenal career thus far as one of the hottest DJs and she's going strong to increase her brand. Her story is one of perseverance and faithfulness. Many of us have our "after 5" positions as DJs, Radio Personalities, Publicists, Artists, Managers, Bartenders, Filmmakers, Video Directors, or Entertainers of some sort but to walk away from a secure job to full entrepreneurship is a true test of faith. So make sure you download the official DJ K Yung App for all mixes and updates!
