Beats and Bars Festival Review

Happy Monday Luvs!

Downtown Durham was Lit all weekend long! The 1st Beats and Bars Festival was this weekend which was organized by the Underground Collective with sponsors The Vault, The Pinhook, WXDU, and Candid Yams just to name a few. It was an eventful festival engraved with layered textures of Hip Hop. Personally, I loved the dynamic of options it offered from dope musical performances to in-depth discussions of Hip Hop culture branding in mainstream media, and then there was the sense of community that was in the atmosphere. Brand management and social media presence of the culture of Hip Hop should be discussed more openly on a business level. Many times we take for granted the doors Hip Hop has opened, the crossover affect its had, or the cultural lifestyle it brings. Its a genre where uniqueness is acceptable and viewed as art.

The Beats and Bars Festival was just that lots of  breakthrough beats and thought provoking bars flowed thru Durham, NC this weekend. One thing that stood out to me was the connections with the audience and the artist. I loved that The Pinhook offered a venue space where the fan and artist could connect so easily. We had an opportunity to talk with many of the headliners and watching their performances was truly an ode to Hip Hop NC style. Its so much talent that resides in our state and many times we are underrated.

However, during Lyricist & The Smoking Gunn Cigar Creator Joshua Gunn;s set he lit the stage on fire with his lyrical infused freestyle about Bow Wow's disrespect towards NC. This weekend proved that NC is indeed popping and not only are we popping we are making major moves right where we are together.

Overall, it was an experience that was one to remember and I think the planning team executed a spectacular cultural event that I hope continues each year. The Lux Blog would like to wish continued success to Crystal E. Taylor (@thequeencurator) and her team. Just like with Art of Cool and Black August in the Park I'm already excited for what's to come in 2017 for Beats and Bars Festival.
