Not only was it my first time experiencing the annual Art of Cool Fest, but it was also my first time walking the streets of Downtown Durham. Durham was full of everyday people from all backgrounds there were dreamers, artists, and entrepreneurs. I felt drawn into a huge celebration of alternative soul and jazz music.
I had a chance to ask artist RC and The Gritz, “What keeps you grounded?”. He shared a little about his foundation, which was God, and how his father is a pastor so that is what he holds on to. I felt inspired by his words because I've witnessed fame take so many away from their foundation in God to the point they’re embarrassed to admit it when interviewed. I enjoyed meeting and talking to Ari Lennox, who signed with J. Cole's Dreamville Records. Her personality is extremely dope.
The sun went down and it was time for the main event! I was so excited to see Common's performance. His performance was empowering and playful with a hint of “OMG he so fine” which kept the women on the edge of their seats most of the night. This was my first time experiencing the mystic Art of Cool Festival and it most definitely will not be my last.
